Royal Win Under - 16 Rugby Championship

A very well organized Royal outfit overcame a fighting Isipathana team 12-5 to win the All Island Schools Under-16 rugby tournament worked off at Bogambara yesterday. In doing so, Royal put paid to Isipathana’s hopes of making a clean sweep of the age group rugby titles.

The champion Royal team had it fairly easy in the semis overcoming Science College 17-7. Of particular interest to the Royalists is their win over Bradby rivals Trinity 15-0 in the quarters. The Royal triumph is a feather in the cap of coach Asanga Rodrigo.

Isipathana had a good tournament, but came up short in the final. They beat Maliyadeva 31-0 and Piliyandala Central 24-5. Their match against Kingswood ended in a 17-17 draw. But they progressed to the quarters by virtue of having scored a greater number of tries.Another prominent side, St. Peter’s were given a fight by St. John’s, Nugegoda (10-5). They survived a scare and took Isipathana to the wire. The Antonians were put down 5-7 by Trinity, but went onto stretch Science College in the quarters. Royal vice-captain Sabith Feroz was selected the Player of the Tournament. The following did duty for the champion Royal side. Nikila de Silva (Captain), Sabith Feroz, Maleesha Madumewan, Lennox Kalyanaratne, Sasitha Siyath, M.S.M. Ifan, Ibrahim Bari, Thulaib Hasan, Deshan Perera, Samadi Karunaratne, Lahin Attygala, Nuwan Jayawardene, Thanuja Samaranayake, Dilan Guawardene, Yasis Rushmik. Isipathana was represented by Piyum Ediriweera (Captain), Dinith Galhena, Nifraz Nilamudeen, Kelum de Silva, Chamath Kalhara, Manilka Ruberu, Nadeesha Shaminda, Supun Seneviratna, Janith Serasinghe, M.M. Salgado.

Science beat St. Anthony’s Katugastota 3-0 (extra-time 12-12)

Isipathana beat Vidyartha 31-14
