Thomians Regain Sevens Title after 22 Years

Boomindra Dissanayake came up with a magnificent performance scoring a last minute try to lead S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia to the Under-20 Inter-School Sevens Championship beating last year’s runners-up Isipathana College 19 (2 goals, 1 try) points to 14 (2 goals) in the final played at Royal Sports Complex in Colombo on Sunday. A minute away from the long whistle, Isipathana were leading 14 points to 12 and appeared settled to end the jinx of losing finals. However, Dissanayake had other ideas as he ran some 20 meters to touch under the post. The Thomian smartly brushed aside two tackles on his way to the line. Earlier, seven minutes into the game, Isipathana drew first blood scoring through Sumudhu Anuradha. The effort was converted into a goal by Gayan Wickramaratne. S. Thomas’ then equalized as Dhanuja Wijeratne sneaked through the defense and crossed the try line. Aswantha Herath was spot on with the kick adding the extra points. S. Thomas’ then expanded the lead when Praveen Ferdinando scored an unconverted try. At half-time, S. Thomas were leading 12-7. After the break, Randi Silva put Isipathana ahead with a clever try and Wickramaratne added the extra points. Then Boomindra Dissanayake became an instant hero scoring the decisive try in the last minute of the game.
