Isipathana Beat All Odds To Clinch Trophy

Isipathana after loosing to Science Maroons in the group stages came back storming into the finals to beat the unbeaten Agoal RA in the finals of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union Under 20 Rugby 7’s Tournament by 26 points (3 Goals, 1 Try) To 10 (2 Tries) after having a slender lead of 7-5 at the breather. The entire tournament was worked off at Race Course grounds in Colombo yesterday.

After a closely contested battle for supremacy Agoal Rugby Academy opened scoring in the 2nd minute of the first half when their winger Reiza Rafaideen (Captain of Kingswood College, Kandy) went over for a try near the left corner flag off a beautiful three quarter move. He missed the difficult touchline conversion. The score read 5 Nil in favour of Agoal.
In the 9th minute of play Isipathana took the lead when Isuru Kongahawatta playing At scrum half for the injured Sudam Sooriarachchi made a beautiful off load to centre Chamod Fernando, who sprinted his way for a try. Kongahawatta made the conversion and the score read Isipathana 7 points to Agoal 5.
At half time the score stood out Isipathana 7 to Ago al 5.
After the resumption In the 3rd minute of play Isipathana took the lead when their winger Asitha Punchihewa collected a pass from fly half Rehan Silva and scored a fantastic try after a blistering 60 metre run down the left corner flag. Kongahawatte missed the difficult conversion and the score read 12-5 in favour of Isipathana.
In the very next minute the Agoal winger Reiza Rafaideen collected a pass from Sithum Peiris (Wesley College and CR and FC flanker) and scored a sensational try after a 80 metre breath taking run. Rafaideen missed the difficult conversion and the score read Isipathana 12 points to Agoal 10.
In the 8th minute of play Captain Omalka Gunarathna crashed through for a try and the conversion was put over by Scrum half Isuru Kongahawatta to increase the lead to 19-12 in favour of Isipathana.
Within two minutes the gutsy Isipathana lads sealed the game, after ball changed several hands on to their hard running centre Kushan Indunil who scampered through for a try under the post after a fabulous three quarter move. Isuru Kongahawatta made the simple conversion to give Isipathana a sensational 26 points to 10 victory over Agoal Rugby Academy.
